The Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program (MMSP) is always interested in speaking to persons, groups, or organizations who want to promote motorcycle safety by sponsoring a training site. There is much involved in sponsoring a training site. Finding a classroom facility, having a paved area large and secure enough to accommodate a 120’ x 220’ range with a 40’ runoff, obtaining training motorcycles, handling enrollment, hiring RiderCoaches, and ensuring the standards of the MMSP and Motorcycle Safety Foundation are maintained. MMSP does all it can to assist in setting up the training site with painting the range, providing student handbooks, training materials, training of RiderCoaches and providing technical assistance with all aspects of sponsoring a training site.

Browse the links below to view some of the more detailed requirements. If you are interested in learning more about being a training site sponsor, contact MMSP’s State Coordinator at (660)543-4834.

Range Requirements

The range should be selected with safety in mind. Ideally, the surface should be smooth and flat, and free from hazards and obstacles. The riding area should be closed off from regular vehicular traffic and far enough from existing traveled roadways to provide a buffer area should a rider momentarily lose operational control. The runoff area for the range in general and for exercises specifically is recommended to be a minimum of 20’ width 40′ preferred. This means a flat as possible area measuring a minimum of 260′ x 160′. It is possible to arrange exercises around permanent objects such as light poles and curb dividers, as long as exercise-specific distances and space guidelines are followed.

Supplies and Materials

Here is a partial list of equipment and materials necessary for conducting the Basic RiderCourse:

Motorcycles
Cones/markers
Safety equipment (first aid kit, fire extinguisher, emergency numbers)
Motorcycle supplies (plugs, levers, oil, fuel cans and fuel, rags)
Battery charger
Tire pump/air compressor
Spray paint, chalk, duct tape, tape measures
Tools
Classroom/participant materials (handouts, tests)
Range materials (score sheets, clipboard, stopwatch, whistle)
Rider Gear

All riding by RiderCoaches and participants must be done with proper riding gear, which minimally includes a helmet and eye protection, sturdy over-the-ankle footwear, long-sleeved shirt or jacket, sturdy pants, and full-fingered gloves.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles, whether program-owned, loaned or participant-owned, must be in safe operating condition. The new training motorcycle policy recognizes that engine size, weight and seat height should be taken into account when selecting training motorcycles. Therefore, any motorcycle model manufactured for on-highway use that has an engine displacement of 500cc or less meets MMSP’s requirement for training motorcycles.
